04 Nov Celebrating Music, Community, and Legacy at the Coletrain Music Academy Fall Fundraiser
A couple of weeks ago, we came together in the Ivy Ballroom at Surf Hotel to celebrate our shared love for music and community at our annual Coletrain Music Academy Fall Fundraiser. The evening was filled with captivating performances, meaningful conversations, delicious food, and an inspiring spirit of generosity.
The evening kicked off with a lively courtyard jam, where musicians of all ages came together, sharing spontaneous melodies while onlookers gathered, some even joining in the music. Against a backdrop of disco balls, pumpkins, pizza, s’mores, and cider, the festive atmosphere set the tone for a memorable night. As the sun set, guests moved inside to enjoy an electrifying lineup featuring Heavy Diamond Ring and The Whiskey Sweets, with special performances by CMA Director Coleman Smith (of Yonder Mountain String Band), Alex Johnstone (of Rapidgrass), and CMA Instructor Brandon Katz (of The Chaffee Experiment). Each set captivated the crowd, blending beloved covers with original songs, but perhaps the most moving moment was Heavy Diamond Ring’s heartfelt tribute to the late Bonnie Culpepper with one of her own compositions.
The silent auction was another highlight, featuring an incredible variety of items generously donated by local businesses and artists. From VIP WinterWonderGrass passes and ski passes to Monarch Resort to a luxury experience at the Surf Hotel, the auction offered something special for everyone, while fueling excitement for an important cause.
A particularly memorable moment of the evening was the announcement of the Bonnie Culpepper Scholarship, a tribute to Bonnie’s lasting impact as a cherished community member and dedicated advocate for youth and the arts. Announced by Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County’s Executive Director Brian Beaulieu, this ongoing scholarship—established in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chaffee County—will provide qualifying children from the Buena Vista and Salida Clubs with free tuition, instruments, and curriculum. By opening doors to music education, the scholarship will foster young talent and ensure Bonnie’s legacy of kindness and support continues to inspire for years to come.

Thanks to the generous funds raised, Coletrain Music Academy is poised to broaden its impact, offering even more scholarships, instruments, and innovative programs—including our highly anticipated String Ensemble launching in 2025. We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, donated, volunteered, and contributed in countless ways to make this night a success. Building a thriving community truly takes a village, and together, we are creating a place where creativity, connection, and opportunity flourish.
