Coleman is the kind of musician who has never stopped learning. He brings years of performance experience, a deep understanding of music, and a genuine curiosity to everything he does. More importantly, he knows how to meet students where they are and help them build confidence at the piano. I’m really excited to have him joining our teaching team.
— Coleman Smith, CMA Founder & Music Director
For Coleman Twyford, music has always been equal parts passion, curiosity and practice. He began seriously pursuing music at age 10, developing his skills both on the stage and behind the piano before studying jazz theory at the UMKC Conservatory in Kansas City.
At 17, Coleman moved to Chicago, where his drive to grow as a performer and songwriter immersed him in a thriving music community and gave him opportunities to cross paths with and learn from legendary artists including Herbie Hancock, Brian Wilson and Charles Bradley. Those experiences helped shape not only the musician he would become, but also his belief that great musicianship is built through exploration, consistency and a genuine love of playing.
Today, Coleman brings that experience to his students at Coletrain Music Academy as a piano instructor. His teaching style is relaxed, encouraging and personalized, helping students build a strong musical foundation while developing the confidence to make music their own.
Whether a student is sitting down at the piano for the first time or looking to take existing skills further, Coleman incorporates chords, scales, rhythm, music reading, technique and songs students actually enjoy playing. His goal is to meet each student where they are, help them understand the “why” behind what they’re learning and give them the tools to continue growing as musicians.
